Today Can be Your ‘Someday‘
Someday: That mystical place where everything finally gets done.
It’s similar to ‘tomorrow’ but worse in that the things we push off until tomorrow are typically not that important. Someday, though, is where we push everything important and I mean, everything. Things so important that we can’t do it now, tomorrow or even next week. In fact the things we move into the someday category are often so important that we can’t even commit to completing them next month, and most likely not even in the coming year. No, these are big, important things!Someday...I will own a big home, a white picket fence, loads of money in my account, a theatre sized TV, a yard, a cleaning service, a vacation home...and oh yeah, a job I love that allows me the time and space to do what I want, when I want. BIG things! The part that we have difficulty believing is that we do have some control. I mean, let’s face it, it is easier to believe that we don’t have control on the big things we want in our life. After all, if it is not in our control then it is not necessarily our fault when we don’t get it. And, if it is not really in our control, then we don’t have to do anything differently in our life right now to even get it. So that is kind of perfect, right? We can simply add the things we want to this mysterious and ever growing someday list, and hope and pray it will all come to fruition. It’s like throwing your penny into the wishing well. There you go....make something happen!
But...what if you are wrong about someday? I am not suggesting that if you want a large bank account and a home with a picket fence you could go out and get it this minute, however that doesn’t let you off the hook either. What if I told you that by throwing it on the someday pile it actually pushes it further and further away?
It’s true. That is what is happening.Your someday pile reminds me of the things we think we are recycling. I have seen that picture before. Dozens of times actually. For me, since I believe in recycling and have stopped using water bottles (at least it’s one thing I can do), I can’t seem to unsee that image. Have you seen it before? Piles and piles of plastic! Ugh. And no, this blog is not about recycling. However the metaphor works.“
When plastic bags are thrown away they usually end up in landfills or in waterways and oceans. Reusit.com reports that in a landfill, plastics may take up to 1,000 years to degrade.” Now I don’t know about you, but every time I add something to my recycling can, I do not think, ‘oh good, 1,000 years and that will be gone.’ No. I think I am doing my part right now. I I use this image because it is easy to understand. We recycle now, because we want to be resourceful. Make a change. Make a difference. Yet maybe in this case, with a little perspective, we should try to eliminate as many of these things from our life as possible, so we don’t have to hope that someday they will be gone from the earth (there’s that word again!). If that even happens. Like giving up water bottles, or plastic straws, to only name a few. That would be an immediate change we could make, which over time, would hopefully help...if in fact everyone started to do that and it caught on like wild fire.
But now back to you and your life. What if you made a list of the things you truly wanted and wrote them down with real intention to have them? What if instead of hurling them into some fountain of hope, you took your life serious and began to declare when you wanted these things to occur?
If you did that one simple thing, you could start creating someday...today! Because the truth is that you do have power over your future. By doing one small thing each day, you will get closer to the life you want every single day! In fact, if you keep it up for a year, you will have done 365 things towards that someday goal. Which might be all ‘someday’ needs!Try it on. Own your now. After all, it is yours to own.
